■ Features and Benefits
The high-voltage cable outer sheath fault locator is designed based on the Murray bridge principle and can be used to pinpoint breakdown points in installed wires and cables, as well as defects exhibiting low insulation resistance without apparent breakdown. It is also suitable for locating faults in various types of cables within cable manufacturing facilities.
The device employs a switch-mode power supply to generate a high‑voltage constant‑current source, with an open‑circuit voltage of 7,500 V and a short‑circuit current of 40 mA. It utilizes a high‑sensitivity amplifier and a galvanometer to indicate balance, forming a balanced bridge together with a proportional potentiometer. The entire assembly is housed at a high potential, and the measurement cable is a specially designed, double‑core high‑voltage rubber cable. A four‑terminal resistance measurement technique is used to eliminate errors introduced by lead resistance, while the cable is reliably grounded through its braided shield. The control knobs on the panel remain at low potential, and the bridge is operated via an insulating rod. The high‑voltage constant‑current source and the bridge are integrated into a portable aluminum alloy enclosure. Consequently, this device… High voltage, lightweight, easy to operate, and safe to use.
Compared with the wave‑reflection method, the bridge‑balance method has no blind zone and is particularly well suited for locating short cables and breakdown points near the cable ends; it is also easy to operate.
Especially suitable for
1. After installation, high‑impedance breakdown points in cables—particularly those that are difficult to burn down to low impedance, such as linear high‑impedance breakdowns at cable splices—must be addressed.
2. For flashover-type breakdown points, the constant-current source can sustain the arc after breakdown, ensuring a stable current flows through the bridge circuit, which in turn provides sufficient sensitivity.
3. Defect points that have not yet experienced breakdown but exhibit relatively low resistance—for example, insulation defects detected by a megohmmeter as having low resistance, yet which do not break down under operating voltage.
Due to the aforementioned characteristics High-Resistance Fault Location Bridge for Cables Especially suitable for the following users:
Teams specializing in fault location—such as cable repair and testing units at large and medium-sized power supply bureaus and major electricity‑using enterprises—can use the XHHG521 model to quickly pinpoint the approximate location of most cable breakdowns. When used in conjunction with the wave‑reflection method and a fault locator, it leverages the strengths of each approach to achieve faster, more reliable fault localization.
1. Small‑scale users, such as small power supply bureaus and medium‑sized electricity‑consuming enterprises: These typically have a limited number of cables, clear routing, relatively short cable lengths, and a low frequency of faults. Equipping them with a full‑featured waveform‑reflection fault locator would be costly and demand high levels of operator skill and experience, making it less than ideal. Instead, the XHHG521 tester, which is easy to operate and capable of meeting everyday needs, represents a more practical solution.
2. Cable manufacturing plant : Within the factory, it can be used to locate breakdown points in various types of cables; when equipped with a digital capacitance meter, it can also pinpoint open-circuit locations. This device is lightweight and easy to carry to the field, enabling on-site cable‑locating services for cable users.
