The fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month marks the midpoint of autumn, which is why it is called the Mid-Autumn Festival or the Mid‑Autumn Season. Also known as the Reunion Festival, it is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month; it derives its name from falling precisely halfway through the three autumn months.
Since ancient times, the Mid-Autumn Festival has been celebrated with customs such as moon worship, moon gazing, moon salutations, eating mooncakes, admiring osmanthus flowers, and sipping osmanthus wine—practices that have endured through the ages. Marking the full moon as a symbol of family reunion, the festival serves as a heartfelt expression of homesickness and longing for loved ones, while also invoking hopes for bountiful harvests and lasting happiness. As a result, it has become a richly diverse and immensely cherished cultural heritage. Alongside the Dragon Boat Festival, Spring Festival, and Qingming Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival is regarded as one of China’s four major traditional holidays.
